Sedation Dentistry

We offer several types of Dental Sedation for our fearful patients.  We are aware that there are many patients, who are afraid to get their dental treatment done.  Fortunately, with dental sedation even the most anxious or terrified patient can get their care performed in a relaxed or pain-free state.  We do utilize the services of a anethesiologist, if a patient would prefer general anesthesia to be put to sleep.

For the mildly anxious patient, who requires more than our painless dentistry and gentle touch, we offer nitrous oxide sedation.  Nitrous oxide or laughing gas allows Dr. Mermelstein to complete his dental treatment, while our patient is conscious and in a euphoric like relaxed state.  The pain threshold is raised from the nitrous oxide, so it is easier to anesthetize the patient and perform pain-free dentistry.  Most patients find their nitrous oxide appointment to be pleasurable and choose to use it again in the future.

More appropriate for the true dental phobic is conscious or enteral sedation.  To achieve sedation medication is given orally that wil reduce consciousness and place the patient in a sleep like state.  During treatment nitrous oxide and local anesthesia will most likely be used as well.  Patients find their treatment to be painless and due to the amnesia like effect from the medication, they usually do not remember what happened during their visit.  This procedure is very safe, though an advanced amount of training and equipment is required, as well as a sedation permit from the state.  Dr. Mermelstein is up to date in sedation training and holds one of a limited number of sedation permits in New Jersey.  Dr Mermelstein has had advanced sedation training with DOCS (Dental Organization for Concious Sedation) at the NYU College of Dentistry.
